The remains of this Inca administrative and ceremonial center are situated high above the Mapocho River, in the province of Paucartambo. A 32-kilometer trail from Huancarani to Watoqto and a 20-kilometer trail to Paucartambo, following the course of the river, offers an excellent opportunity for downhill mountain biking.
The route down from the natural viewing point over the Amazon basin known as Tres Cruces de Oro to the picturesque village of Paucartambo offers a spectacular mountain biking experience. The best time of year to observe the sunrise over the Amazon basin is from May to July.
The village of Challabamba is situated just 16 kilometers from Paucartambo, Local villagers grow traditional crops such as Peruvian ground cherries, plums and pumpkins. In the nearby indigenous Q'eros community, the main crop is the potato.
From Paucartambo, it is short drive to Tres Cruces de Oro, a natural viewing point halfway between the Andes and the Amazon, within Manu National Park, from where it is possible to witness a spectacular sunrise over the seemingly endless green mantle formed by the lowland tropical forests. The best time of year to witness this natural phenomenon is from May to July.
Festivity of the Virgen del Carmen of Paucartambo takes place from July 14 to 19, the principal day is the 16th.
